Strawberries and Summer

The summer heat has reached us, and if the weather reports are any indication, the warmth is finally here to stay. Nevertheless, this is Michigan and it could start snowing at any moment… meanwhile, now is a good time to start working on our farmers’ tans!

Fruit Available

Strawberries – juicy and sweet, the fruit season is beginning. We only have a limited supply of berries this week, because this is the first harvest of the season. There are two varieties available right now, Earliglow and Wendy. Wendy has a lot of strawberry flavor, but Earliglow has the sweetest taste. Come by and grab some for yourself!

Rhubarbis only around for a few more weeks, so come and get it while you still can.

Asparagus -we have both purple and green asparagus, and all shapes and lengths in one-pound bunches. Every stalk of asparagus is beautiful in its own unique way, especially when it’s presented on your dinner plate…

As usual there will be lots of honey, fresh eggs, and preserves.

This is the perfect seasonal dessert, especially when topped with lots of vanilla ice cream on a hot summer evening. Add some good friends, a handful of fireflies, a few mosquitoes, and you have yourself a party!

Rhubarb Strawberry Crunch

You will need:

For the sauce -                                                         For the topping -

3 cups sliced strawberries, fresh                          1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup white sugar                                                     1 cup packed brown sugar

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour                            1 cup butter

3 cups diced rhubarb                                              1 cup rolled oats

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together strawberries, white sugar, three tablespoons flour, and the rhubarb. Place the mixture in a 9 by 13 baking dish. In another large bowl, use a pastry blender to mix flour, sugar, rolled oats, and butter. Crumble liberally on top of the rhubarb and strawberry mixture. Bake 45 minutes, or until crisp and lightly browned. Serve warm.

If you’ve ever come to see us at Green City Market, there’s no way you missed the tantalizing smell of crepes floating through the air. Gotta B Crepes (as Abby’s Crepes)  sets up shop right across from us at Green City. Many early mornings we walk over to deliver the fruit and end up buying several mouthwatering, utterly delicious crepes. It’s so much fun to be able to taste our fresh fruit presented in a whole new way. If you haven’t tasted one of their amazing creations, you’re seriously missing out!
